Wes Anderson In Person with THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL!

“Wes Anderson … has a very special kind of talent: He knows how to convey the simple joys and interactions between people so well and with such richness. This kind of sensibility is rare in movies.” - Martin Scorsese

From the launch of BOTTLE ROCKET, it was clear that cinema had a distinctive new voice in Wes Anderson. When the tale about wannabe Texas burglars (expanded from the original B&W short) reached the big screen in 1996, its director’s affection for the quirks of human behavior was on full display - along with a remarkable ability to foster onscreen chemistry among his actors. As a result, Anderson’s “stock company” has grown steadily from Andrew, Luke and Owen Wilson (the latter a UT at Austin classmate) to include such actors as Jason Schwartzman (RUSHMORE) and Bill Murray (THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU).

With a stylized approach to dialogue and visuals, there’s a storybook quality to Anderson’s films that somehow makes their characters ring even truer to life. Like fables, they bring a sense of wonder to an everyday world, and that’s certainly the case in THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, whose 1920s European setting provides a gilded frame to a portrait of a cultivated concierge and his devoted apprentice.

Series programmed by Grant Moninger and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston.

Wes Anderson will appear in person with a Members-only advance screening of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL on March 5th.
