The paranoid dread of JAWS. The hypnotic trance of VERTIGO. The melancholic anxiety of THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Film scores illicit themes and emotions from the viewer with both subtle gestures and attention-grabbing showmanship. They’re a pivotal foundation of a film and over the course of 2020, the American Cinematheque will be diving deep into the minds of the masters behind the craft.

Each month at one of our theatres we’ll be celebrating the most innovative film and television composers in the industry today. With the composing landscape being as wide-ranging and creative as it’s ever been, this will include compositions from names across all styles, backgrounds and mediums. Each event will have a discussion matched with an unforgettable film/program they scored. The audience will get a firsthand look at the artist’s methods, path into composing and an idea of what to listen for in the film they’re about to see.

The first edition of our program brings Daniel Hart and Bobby Krlic to the Egyptian Theatre to discuss Hart’s contributions to A GHOST STORY and Krlic’s haunting score to MIDSOMMAR. After the Q&A, we’ll screen both films (including the extended cut of MIDSOMMAR) so the audience can experience both from a completely new perspective.

Series compiled by Andrew Ameter and Chris LeMaire. Program notes by Andrew Ameter.
