In preparation for the upcoming awards season, the American Cinematheque will present several countries' submissions for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar, some of them with the filmmakers appearing in person. Among the highlights is the United Kingdom’s entry I AM NOT A WITCH, Rungano Nyoni’s stunning and surreal drama about an 8-year-old girl in rural Zambia who is imprisoned for life in a state-run witch camp. Belarus is represented by Darya Zhuk’s CRYSTAL SWAN, about a young woman who tries to get a U.S. visa by faking employment in a small factory town. From Croatia, Ivan Salaj’s THE EIGHTH COMMISSIONER follows a scandal-mired politician exiled to Croatia's most remote island, where he is to organize its first valid election. Switzerland is represented by Markus Imhoof’s ELDORADO, a documentary about the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. Poland’s official Oscar submission is COLD WAR, a love story loosely inspired by the lives of director Pawel Pawlikowski’s (IDA) parents. Our Cinema Italian Style series also includes an Oscar submission: Matteo Garrone’s underworld drama DOGMAN, starring Marcello Fonte as a pet groomer who moonlights as a coke dealer.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston.
