In preparation for the upcoming awards season, the American Cinematheque will present several countries' submissions for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar, with the filmmakers appearing in person. Among the highlights are Georgian entry SCARY MOTHER, Ana Urushadze’s drama about a woman whose long-repressed desire to become a writer puts her in conflict with her husband. Switzerland is represented by Petra Volpe’s THE DIVINE ORDER, about a dutiful housewife who inadvertently becomes the poster child for her town’s suffragette movement in the early 1970s. From Canada, François Girard’s HOCHELAGA, LAND OF SOULS follows a Mohawk archaeologist digging through generations of buried secrets in Montreal. Our Cinema Italian Style series also includes an Oscar submission: Jonas Carpignano’s keenly observed profile of a 14-year-old boy on the poor side of a Calabrian town, A CIAMBRA.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston.
