On the occasion of his new film MANK, director David Fincher joins us for a career-spanning conversation. RSVP here for the online discussion.
Since emerging as a top commercial and music video director in the 1980s, David Fincher has become one of the most successful feature filmmakers in Hollywood. While famed for such thrillers as SEVEN, FIGHT CLUB, PANIC ROOM and GONE GIRL, Fincher has earned acclaim for a range of work stretching from period fantasy THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON to real-life drama THE SOCIAL NETWORK – earning Best Director Oscar nominations for the latter two films. Recent years have seen Fincher explore television production with House of Cards and the Emmy-winning animated series Love, Death & Robots.
Fincher’s latest feature carries a personal connection for the director. Having been turned on to CITIZEN KANE as a teenager by his father Jack, he became intrigued by the backstage drama of its creation. When his dad retired and said he was thinking of writing a screenplay, Fincher suggested focusing on KANE screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz’s story. Shot in a style that pays tribute to CITIZEN KANE without simply copying it, MANK stands as a fascinating reflection of Hollywood’s Golden Age and a thought-provoking story of one man’s search for self-worth.
