Terry Jones In Person!

A FUNNY SENSE OF DIRECTION: THE WILD RIDE OF TERRY JONES

Comedy fans may know him best for TV appearances as lower-class British housewives, Spanish Inquisitors or naked organists. But Terry Jones’ work behind the camera is just as memorable as his Monty Python characters.

It was at Oxford University that Jones began the circuitous path that would lead him to international renown as a co-founder of the Python troupe. Performing sketches with the Oxford Revue, he found a writing partner with a similarly surreal sense of humor in Michael Palin; the two collaborated on several British television series in the late 1960s. One of these left Jones with an epiphany: “It was doing ‘The Complete and Utter History of Britain’ that got me really convinced that you have to control everything. You not only act in the things - you've got to actually start directing the things as well.”

When Monty Python’s Flying Circus took flight, its six writer-performers (who included Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and John Cleese) enjoyed a great deal of creative freedom, and though the series didn’t seat one particular individual in the director’s chair, Jones’ penchant for innovation and visual ambition became its guiding light. That became even clearer when the Pythons branched out into feature films - MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL was co-directed by Jones and Gilliam, while LIFE OF BRIAN and MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE were helmed by Jones alone. ERIK THE VIKING and MR. TOAD’S WILD RIDE were made outside of the Python fold (though each includes appearances by group members) but both are distinguished by Jones’ imaginative brand of storytelling, wringing laughter from ancient Norway and early 20th-century England, respectively.

Series programmed by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.

We are thrilled to welcome Terry Jones to the Egyptian and Aero Theatres!
