ARGO
2012, Warner Bros., 120 min, USA, Dir: Ben Affleck

Nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture! In November of 1979, Iranian militants stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking more than 50 hostages - but six Americans eluded capture by hiding in the Canadian embassy. The little-known mission to rescue them serves as the basis for this acclaimed thriller helmed by Ben Affleck, who also stars as CIA operative Tony Mendez. The improbable scheme used to smuggle the six out of Iran: disguise them as Canadian moviemakers, in the country scouting locations for a sci-fi film named "Argo." This story of unsung heroes earned Chris Terrio a nomination for best adapted screenplay and veteran actor Alan Arkin an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of movie producer Lester Siegel. The fantastic ensemble cast is rounded out by Bryan Cranston and John Goodman. Other nominations include William Goldenberg for best film editing, Alexandre Desplat for Best Original Score, Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn for best sound Editing and John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff and Jose Antonio Garcia for Best Sound Mixing. ARGO won Best Picture Critics' Choice Movie Award as well as a Best Director prize for Affleck. “Argo takes first place on my best movie list because it is above all else a movie - pure, strong and sound." - Roger Ebert
