ON THE ROCKS
2020, Apple Original Films, 96 min, USA, Dir: Sofia Coppola

Laura (Rashida Jones) thinks she’s happily hitched, but when her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) starts logging late hours at the office with a new co-worker, Laura begins to fear the worst. She turns to the one man she suspects may have insight: her charming, impulsive father Felix (Bill Murray), who insists they investigate the situation. As the two begin prowling New York at night, careening from uptown parties to downtown hotspots, they discover at the heart of their journey lies their own relationship. Acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola brings a light touch to this blend of an exuberant love letter to New York, a generation-clash comedy about how we see relationships differently from our parents, and a funny celebration of the complications that bind modern families even as they tie us in crazy knots.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES
1999, Paramount, 97 min, USA, Dir: Sofia Coppola

For her feature directorial debut, Sofia Coppola adapted the Jeffrey Eugenides novel of adolescent repression and rebellion in an upper-class Detroit suburb in the 1970s. A group of local boys are mesmerized by the mysterious Lisbon sisters, who are kept on a short leash by overprotective parents James Woods and Kathleen Turner. When one of the girls (Kirsten Dunst) strikes up a relationship with one of the guys (Josh Hartnett), it sets in motion a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

LOST IN TRANSLATION
2003, Focus Features, 105 min, USA, Japan, Dir: Sofia Coppola

Two Americans cross paths one night in a luxury hotel bar in Tokyo. Bob (Bill Murray, never better) is a movie star shooting a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. A box office hit, LOST IN TRANSLATION was nominated for four Oscars, earning one for director Sofia Coppola’s Best Original Screenplay.
