2018, Netflix, 135 min, Dir: Alfonso Cuarón

Roma is the Mexico City suburb where Alfonso Cuarón grew up, and this quietly powerful drama, set in the early 1970s, tempers nostalgia for his youth with the awareness of simmering political tensions. In a loving portrait inspired by the filmmaker’s nanny Libo, Cleo (newcomer Yalitza Aparicio, terrific here) works as a maid for Sofia, Antonio and their four children and must deal with both her employers’ marital problems and a personal crisis of her own to keep the household running. The Golden Lion winner at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, ROMA breathes with long takes and gorgeous B&W cinematography (by the director himself). “Cuarón has done more than break through walls of language, culture and class to craft the best movie of the year” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.
