THE HATEFUL EIGHT
2015, The Weinstein Company, 187 min, USA, Dir: Quentin Tarantino

For this wintery Western, writer-director Quentin Tarantino has marshaled an all-star cast including Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern. In post-Civil War Wyoming, a blizzard brings eight desperate characters - a combustible mix of bounty hunters, lawmen, criminals and ex-soldiers from both sides of the war - under the roof of stagecoach stopover Minnie's Haberdashery; it’s anybody’s guess who will make it out alive. Featuring glorious widescreen vistas and music by Ennio Morricone, Tarantino’s eighth film pulses with blood and betrayal.

BONE TOMAHAWK
2015, RLJ Entertainment, 133 min, USA, Dir: S. Craig Zahler

This unusual mix of Western and horror stars Kurt Russell as sheriff Franklin Hunt, who keeps the townsfolk of Good Hope safe with the help of his trusty deputy (Richard Jenkins). When a drifter with something to hide arrives and is wounded in a bar fight, both he and the doctor who treats him (Lili Simmons) vanish, leading Hunt and his search party (which also includes Mathew Fox and Patrick Wilson) to a tribe of cannibalistic Troglodytes. Sharply scripted and beautifully shot, this quietly contemplative – and at times shockingly violent – film will have you rooting for these men by the time they arrive at the cannibals’ lair.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
1981, Rialto Pictures, 99 min, USA, Dir: John Carpenter

Kurt Russell delivers one of cinema’s most legendary performances as ornery, one-eyed Snake Plissken, a sentenced-to-die anti-hero sent into a maximum-security prison in a Manhattan of the future to rescue U.S. president Donald Pleasence from villain Isaac Hayes. A highly entertaining tall tale with influences ranging from comic books to apocalyptic sci-fi to spaghetti Westerns! With Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton and Adrienne Barbeau.
