It's that time of year again - the time when we're reminded of all the bliss, ecstasy, contentment (and, yes, uncertainty, bizarreness and even misery) that goes arm-in-arm with romance. And what better way to celebrate this roller coaster of a holiday than to go to the movies and see the power of love beautifully and cathartically magnified on the big screen?
Starting on Valentine's Day, join us for some of the greatest films to ever celebrate amour in its many forms, including BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S, GONE WITH THE WIND, CASABLANCA and F.W. Murnau’s silent classic SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS.

Guests In Person!

Fri, Feb 8, 2013 - Thu, Feb 21, 2013

With an Oscar under his belt for CAT BALLOU, Lee Marvin was a bona fide movie star, and while his characters typically remained hard-edged men of action, his increased clout brought the actor leading roles in such diverse and distinctive films as POINT BLANK, PAINT YOUR WAGON and THE BIG RED ONE. Both free-wheeling and plain-speaking, Marvin occasionally chaffed at stardom, but his flip take on authority only increased his appeal in an age when antiheroes still were considered bankable. Join us for a tribute to Lee Marvin, including THE KILLERS, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, HELL IN THE PACIFIC and THE PROFESSIONALS.

Director Michael Cimino is one of the great visionaries of the cinema, a chronicler of America at its best and worst, of its promise and its failures. The Cinematheque is proud to present a new restoration of the director’s cut of HEAVEN’S GATE, along with a selection of other Cimino treasures, including THE DEER HUNTER, THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT, and YEAR OF THE DRAGON.
