New Restorations!

Sun, Sep 22, 2013 - Mon, Sep 22, 2014

The scope of the Cohen Film Collection is staggering, and recently the Cohen Media Group has launched an ambitious campaign to restore films from their acquired Rohauer collection and bring them into the digital age. The American Cinematheque is thrilled to bring some of these treasures to the big screen with a year-long retrospective of the Cohen Film Collection. Our monthly screening series begins with the D.W. Griffith classic INTOLERANCE, restored with original tints and tones and featuring a musical score written and conducted by Carl Davis. Future programs will include films by Claude Chabrol and Jean-Luc Godard as well as a multi-night tribute to Vivien Leigh.

Join us for a retrospective of the durable director - who turns 80 this month - with some of his most visionary films of the past, including REPULSION, THE TENANT, FRANTIC, and ROSEMARY’S BABY.

Fri, Aug 9, 2013 - Fri, Aug 23, 2013

Although he had become one of the industry’s most in-demand writers, Preston Sturges really wanted to direct; he realized that goal with 1940’s THE GREAT MCGINTY, and won the inaugural Best Original Screenplay Oscar in the process. For the rest of the decade, eccentric characters and sparkling dialogue raced by in a blur of comedic gems including THE LADY EVE, SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS, THE PALM BEACH STORY and HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO. Join us for a salute to the first great writer-director on occasion of his 115th birthday this month, which also includes REMEMBER THE NIGHT and CHRISTMAS IN JULY.

Fri, Jul 19, 2013 - Mon, Jul 29, 2013

Working within the strictures of the Soviet film industry taught Andrei Tarkovsky how to comment on modern social and cultural conditions without directly addressing them, and the portrait of medieval icon painter ANDREI RUBLEV, the sci-fi psychodrama SOLARIS and autobiographical THE MIRROR are rich with symbols and imagery whose meaning reveals itself over time. Our tribute to the filmmaker also includes THE SACRIFICE and a brand-new print of NOSTALGHIA.
