Iconoclastic director Raoul Walsh deftly mastered every genre the studios had to offer - from Westerns to gangster yarns, from high-seas adventures to romantic biography and melodrama. In a career spanning five decades, Walsh was the true adventurous spirit, the consummate craftsman and one of the best set-up men in pictures. To celebrate the first book-length biography of Raoul Walsh, the Cinematheque will run a three-night retrospective that includes HIGH SIERRA and THE THIEF OF BAGDAD.

Thu, Jun 2, 2011 - Thu, Jun 23, 2011

Italian director Federico Fellini (1920 - 1993) remains in a category all his own, godfather to a carnival gallery of prostitutes, strongmen, film directors, vaudevillians and clowns, who share a sympathetic bond with each other against the often cruel and unfeeling "civilized" world. His greatest works, including 8 1/2, LA DOLCE VITA, NIGHTS OF CABIRIA, LA STRADA and AMARCORD, seem to spring from an almost unbridled imagination, but one that is connected to a profound understanding of the human experience.

Sun, May 22, 2011 - Sun, Oct 23, 2011

The Art Directors Guild (ADG) Film Society co-hosts a fifth annual series of monthly screenings, highlighting the work of renowned production designers and their creative colleagues.

Fri, May 20, 2011 - Sat, May 21, 2011

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, Albert Brooks made his mark as one of the most innovative standup comedians of his generation. Then, he made his feature debut with the stunningly prescient REAL LIFE in 1979. From that film on, Brooks has created one of the most distinctive and acclaimed bodies of work in the history of American comedy.

Thu, May 12, 2011 - Sat, May 14, 2011

A true American original, Monte Hellman has directed - over the course of one of the strangest and most elliptical careers in Hollywood - a small, brilliantly consistent group of movies. He will appear in person all three nights of this film tribute, which includes the L.A. Premiere of his latest ROAD TO NOWHERE.
