YOUNG FRENCH CINEMA
Presented by the American Cinematheque and UniFrance films, with the support of the French Film & TV Office, French Consulate.

L’Apero (a French custom of drinks and appetizers) is generously provided by Normandie Bakery and Wine-Street.com.

French cinema’s history is illustrious but far from over, as a rising generation of filmmakers embraces a global vision with an amazing capacity to combine cultural influences. “These new filmmakers are showing international audiences that French cinema isn’t limited to a few directors’ and actors’ names: They dare to portray every aspect of our society in a modern and creative way and tackle serious topics,” notes UniFrance films executive director Isabelle Giordano.

Join us for some of today’s best French films and filmmakers, from high-profile independent works to quirky discoveries. These monthly screenings will focus specifically on emerging talents and films that do not currently have U.S. distribution. Our opening program illustrates the wide variety of this new French cinema. Sophie Letourneur’s MACARONI AND CHEESE is an effervescent comedy about three young women and their adventures at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, while PARTY GIRL is a heartwarming drama about a bar hostess (Angélique Litzenburger) who might finally settle down at age 60.

Series compiled by Agathe Dubes. Program notes by John Hagelston.

American Cinematheque Members who belong to the Cinema Explorers Club can see these films for free! Click here for more information.
