Worlds Within Our World: Documentary Shorts 2019

Our fourth annual showcase of nonfiction shorts includes:

L.A. Premiere! April Wright’s “Julio’s Dream” (USA, 9 min.) A man unwittingly inherits the merry-go-round in Griffith Park after the owner dies.

L.A. Premiere! Jia Li’s “Noodle School” (USA, 16 min.) Students learn the art and business of making hand-pulled noodles in Lanzhou, China.

Jonatas Da Silva’s “Life on a String” (USA, 20 min.) Two Los Angeles puppeteers, both men of color, use the ancient art of puppeteering as a voice for their people. While they sometimes struggle to make the life of an artist work, they find humor, joy and ultimately peace when performing for an audience.

L.A. Premiere! Eleanor Blake’s “Breaking and Entering: The Women of the LAPD” (USA, 20 min.) Profile of three groundbreaking women as they change the culture of law enforcement in Los Angeles while pursuing their dreams.

Sasha Rainbow’s “Kamali” (USA, 24 min.) Suganthi was locked away as a child until the day she was married. Now having left her abusive husband and living in a small fishing village in India, she dreams of a better life for her 7-year-old daughter, Kamali, starting with learning how to skateboard.
