WOMEN FILM EDITORS: AN ASSEMBLY

Though hardly exhaustive, our retrospective includes films from the U.S. and around the world spanning 80 years, from 1935 Best Picture MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (edited by Margaret Booth) to 2016 Best Picture MOONLIGHT (edited by Joi McMillon with Nat Sanders). Many of the cinema’s greatest stories have been told by women through film’s invisible art of editing, including THE WIZARD OF OZ (Blanche Sewell), THE 400 BLOWS (Marie-Josephe Yoyotte) and PERSONA (Ulla Ryghe).

Anne V. Coates won an Oscar for cutting LAWRENCE OF ARABIA; her 60-year career includes such films as THE ELEPHANT MAN and OUT OF SIGHT. ALL ABOUT EVE displays the handiwork of Barbara McLean (Academy Award winner for 1944's WILSON), whose decades at 20th Century Fox eventually saw her leading the studio’s editing department. After cutting such classics as AMERICAN GRAFFITI and JAWS, Verna Fields rose through the executive ranks at Universal. Like Fields, Dede Allen helped establish the cinematic language of New Hollywood, with films ranging from THE HUSTLER to DOG DAY AFTERNOON

Among the very first female editors in Hollywood, Viola Lawrence played a major role in shaping THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI; Orson Welles reshot close-ups for the film largely at her urging. Behind a great director you’ll often find a great editor, and though the Martin Scorsese-Thelma Schoonmaker partnership may be the most famous, Anne Bauchens collaborated frequently with director Cecil B. DeMille on such films as THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, and Sally Menke edited all of Quentin Tarantino’s films until her death, including JACKIE BROWN.

Also included in this series is PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (edited by Leslie Jones), THE PIANO (edited by Veronika Jenet), GAS FOOD AND LODGING (edited by Tracy Granger), THE PIANO TEACHER (edited by Monika Willi and Nadine Muse), THE OUTSIDERS (edited by Anne Goursaud), E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (edited by Carol Littlton). THE COLOR OF MONEY (edited by Thelma Schoonmaker) and MULHOLLAND DR. (edited by Mary Sweeney).

Series compiled by Chris LeMaire and Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.
