Iconoclastic director Raoul Walsh carved out a legendary career in Hollywood. He deftly mastered every genre the studios had to offer - from Westerns to gangster yarns, from high-seas adventures to romantic biography and melodrama. Known chiefly as an action director, Walsh's talent actually ran far deeper. His characters could be ruthless, romantic and even heartbreaking. His heroes were lone travelers, his women tough yet vulnerable. In a career spanning five decades, Walsh was the true adventurous spirit, the consummate craftsman and one of the best set-up men in pictures. From Humphrey Bogart's breakout role as Mad Dog Earle in 1941's HIGH SIERRA to Cagney's ruthless Oedipal mess Cody Jarrett in WHITE HEAT in 1949, Walsh's gangsters are as stirring as the heroes and heroines in his silent films, such as the masterly REGENERATION, WHAT PRICE GLORY and THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, starring Douglas Fairbanks. Walsh was Errol Flynn's favorite director and best drinking partner!

To celebrate the first book-length biography of Raoul Walsh, Marilyn Ann Moss's 'Raoul Walsh: The True Adventures of Hollywood's Legendary Director,' the Cinematheque will run a three-night retrospective that highlights Walsh's astonishing career as a director, which also includes THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE and THE ROARING TWENTIES.

Series compiled by Marilyn Ann Moss, Grant Moninger and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by Marilyn Ann Moss and Beth Hanna.

Walsh biographer Marilyn Ann Moss will speak at each screening. She will also be joined by Walsh’s close friend Bob Bookman, actor-director L.Q. Jones, and actors Jack Larson and Richard Erdman for a discussion at the double feature of WHITE HEAT and THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE.
