"Everyone's blessed with one special thing.” - Jack Horner, BOOGIE NIGHTS

After his breakout onto the festival circuit with the marvelous 1993 short “Cigarettes & Coffee,” it became eminently clear that Los Angeles-born writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson was one to watch. Undoubtedly influenced by masters such as Welles, Kubrick and Altman, he also demonstrated a distinct, risk-taking style unique to his own body of work. Early features HARD EIGHT and BOOGIE NIGHTS exhibit his talent for immersing viewers in meticulously-crafted subcultures that serve as backdrops to explore profound, universal themes. This signature quality is expertly developed in more recent films THERE WILL BE BLOOD and THE MASTER, where issues such as power, greed, capitalism and cult lurk in the background of ambitious narratives. While grand in scope, Anderson’s films are at their core driven by dynamic, endlessly intricate characters and their personal journeys amid complex webs of human relationships - thanks in no small part to some of contemporary cinema’s finest actors (namely, frequent collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman). Expansively epic and intimately personal, universally meaningful and rigorously particular - Anderson’s work is a collection of beautiful contradictions that firmly cements his status as one of the great living American auteurs.

Join us for an in-person tribute to Paul Thomas Anderson, which includes MAGNOLIA and PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, as well as an American Cinematheque members-only screening of his latest film, THE MASTER in 70mm.

Following the first-ever screening of THE MASTER in August at the Aero, we are thrilled to welcome Paul Thomas Anderson back to the theatre!

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by Matthew Shields.
