Double Feature! Ingmar Bergman/Max von Sydow Double Drama
THE VIRGIN SPRING / HOUR OF THE WOLF

Two 1960s Ingmar Bergman films starring Max von Sydow, THE VIRGIN SPRING (an inspiration for Wes Craven’s LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT), in which von Sydow is a deeply religious rural farmer who questions his faith when tragedy befalls his daughter and HOUR OF THE WOLF, which finds von Sydow and wife Liv Ullmann on a trip to a desolate island where they become troubled by eerie visions...

THE VIRGIN SPRING
JUNGFRUKÄLLAN
1960, Janus Films, 89 min, Sweden, Dir: Ingmar Bergman

In this period piece set in medieval Sweden, Max von Sydow plays a deeply religious rural farmer who questions his faith when his daughter is raped and murdered. His response to the crime facilitates a classic Bergman inquiry into the existence of God and the juxtaposition between brutality and beauty that informs daily life. An uncommonly poetic treatment of material harsh enough to have inspired, among many other films, Wes Craven’s LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT. In Swedish with English subtitles.

HOUR OF THE WOLF
VARGTIMMEN
1968, Park Circus, 90 min, Sweden, Dir: Ingmar Bergman

Artist Max von Sydow and wife Liv Ullmann take a trip to a desolate island and quickly become troubled by eerie visions - are they hallucinations or something more sinister? Ingmar Bergman combines elements of the horror film with his usual preoccupation with relationships in crisis to create a stunning work. In Swedish with English subtitles.

Both films will screen in 35mm.
