THE STRANGE FRONTIERS OF ANDREI TARKOVSKY

“The beautiful is hidden from the eyes of those who are not searching for the truth,” Andrei Tarkovsky wrote in his book Sculpting in Time. Perhaps the greatest Russian filmmaker since Eisenstein, Tarkovsky (1932-1986) searched for truth and, over the course of seven features, discovered beauty rarely glimpsed in the hurried pace of contemporary cinema.

Working within the strictures of the Soviet film industry taught Tarkovsky how to comment on modern social and cultural conditions without directly addressing them, and sci-fi classics SOLARIS and STALKER are rich with symbols and imagery whose meaning reveals itself over time. If he is most famous for those otherworldly psychodramas, the director gives even familiar locales a strange twist - the Italy of NOSTALGHIA or the Sweden of THE SACRIFICE feel somehow different when seen through the lens of the Russian filmmaker. Ultimately, the mysterious terrain Tarkovsky chose to explore was the frontier of the human soul.

Series programmed by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.
