THE NEVER-ENDING HAYAO MIYAZAKI
Co-presented by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association

With a lifelong interest in illustration, Hayao Miyazaki spent nearly 20 years in the Japanese animation industry before co-founding Studio Ghibli in 1985. The company drew its name from the Italian word for a hot desert wind, and quickly brought some fresh air to Japan’s anime scene with such hits as CASTLE IN THE SKY, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE and the classic MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. Though Ghibli has released work by other directors (most notably Isao Takahata), Miyazaki’s films - with their strong female protagonists, reverence for nature and hand-drawn visuals - have carried the flag for the company.

Miyazaki’s profile rose sharply at the turn of the millennium as Studio Ghibli’s features gained wider distribution beyond Japan. Hailed by such critics as Roger Ebert (who “was spellbound as much as by any film I consider great”), SPIRITED AWAY won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Follow-ups HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE and THE WIND RISES also earned Oscar nominations for the director, who declared in 2013 that WIND would be his final film.

Miyazaki has been threatening retirement since 1997’s PRINCESS MONONOKE, but fortunately for audiences, it doesn’t seem to suit him. NEVER-ENDING MAN: HAYAO MIYAZAKI shows him attempting to master a new skill, CGI animation, through the making of a short film. The new documentary reveals the 77-year-old animator reenergized by the challenges of the digital medium and the drive of younger coworkers. It’s an inspiring look at the boundless well of creativity that is Hayao Miyazaki.
