THE LIFE OF REILLY

John C. Reilly is one of the most versatile actors working today, with an impressive range of roles in dramas, comedies, musicals and foreign films. Born in Chicago, he first appeared on movie screens in 1989’s CASUALTIES OF WAR; director Brian De Palma beefed up what was initially a smaller part when he saw what the actor could do. Reilly has served as a secret weapon for many filmmakers in the years since, including Robert Altman, Terrence Malick, Roman Polanski and Wolfgang Petersen. He’s a particular favorite of Paul Thomas Anderson, who cast the actor in pivotal roles in HARD EIGHT, BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA.

Reilly’s presence seems to elevate whatever ensemble he’s a part of. It’s no accident that in 2002 he appeared in three Best Picture nominees: Martin Scorsese’s GANGS OF NEW YORK, Stephen Daldry’s THE HOURS and the eventual winner, Rob Marshall’s musical CHICAGO, in which Reilly himself earned an Oscar nomination (playing Renée Zellweger’s overly loyal husband). While frequently seen in supporting parts, indies including WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and TERRI show the actor holding a greater share of the screen with a down-to-earth humanity that lingers long in the memory. Reilly’s many theater credits include True West, for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway.

As acclaimed as his dramatic work is, Reilly also excels at lighter fare. He’s costarred with Will Farrell in comedies TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, STEP BROTHERS and the upcoming HOLMES & WATSON; in next year’s Laurel & Hardy biopic STAN & OLLIE, Steve Coogan is his duet partner. He voiced the title character in the animated feature WRECK IT RALPH (and in its sequel, the upcoming RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET) and was the voice of Eddie in SING. His lead performance in music-biopic parody WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY earned Golden Globe and Grammy nominations - and led to Reilly performing in character as Cox during a 2007 concert tour. He also can be seen on TV as the clueless public-access guru of Cartoon Network's “Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule.”

As if he wasn’t busy enough, Reilly also dons a producer’s hat for the new THE SISTERS BROTHERS. Along with his wife and producing partner, Alison Dickey, he’d brought Patrick deWitt’s popular Western novel to director Jacques Audiard in 2012 and quickly struck up a partnership. The dark Western stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reilly as siblings Charlie and Eli Sisters, paid assassins in the Pacific Northwest of 1851. As much an examination of inescapable family bonds as a gunslinging adventure, the film’s strong early reviews position it as yet another triumph in the life of Reilly.
