THE FRENCH HAD A NAME FOR IT 4: Exploring French Film Noir, 1941-1963
Presented by Midcentury Productions and the American Cinematheque, with the support of the French Film & TV office, French Consulate.

Our French noir series returns for its fourth year, digging deeper into what author/programmer Don Malcolm calls the “lost continent” of French film noir. This year the festival explores the dark side of legendary actor Gerard Philipe; reintroduces Eddie Constantine (a key figure identified by last year’s co-host Bertrand Tavernier in his documentary MY JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH FILM); casts a sidelong glance at Jeanne Moreau during her “noir phase” prior to the Nouvelle Vague; gives Aero audiences an exclusive look at Pathé’s 4K restoration of Jacques Deray’s 1963 heist masterpiece SYMPHONY FOR A MASSACRE; and showcases the manic early works of legendary director Henri-Georges Clouzot.

By his own count, Malcolm estimates that there are 589 French noirs from 1931-66; only about a tenth of these are at all known to American audiences. Join him as he continues a process of rediscovery that will ultimately change the way we look at the history of film noir.

All films in French with English subtitles. Series curated by Gwen Deglise and Don Malcolm. Program notes by Don Malcolm.

All screenings introduced by author Don Malcolm.
