THE FLORIDA PROJECT / TANGERINE
Discussion between films with director Sean Baker.
THE FLORIDA PROJECT
2017, A24, 115 min, USA, Dir: Sean Baker

Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, this deeply moving look at childhood follows 6-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her rebellious mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at a budget motel managed by Bobby (a terrific Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious Moonee makes each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure. But her delicate fantasy is reliant upon the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.

TANGERINE
2015, Magnolia Pictures, 88 min, USA, Dir: Sean Baker

Famously shot on iPhones with prototype anamorphic lenses, this decidedly modern holiday tale bursts off the screen with energy and style, defying expectations at every turn. It's Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee (newcomer Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone) hasn't been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the sex worker and her best friend, Alexandra (newcomer Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumor. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity. “An indie tour de force. … TANGERINE jumps off the screen and wows you like nobody's business.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.
