THE FILMS OF MARTY AND BOB

Throughout January, the American Cinematheque is proud to present this complete retrospective of the feature film collaborations between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, a partnership that spans more than 45 years with nine films, including their latest masterpiece, THE IRISHMAN.

Scorsese and De Niro first met in the early 1970s, when both of their careers were just beginning to blossom; Scorsese had just received an encouraging response to his directorial debut, WHO’S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR, and De Niro was getting attention for Brian De Palma’s GREETINGS. It was De Palma who, after giving De Niro his debut role in the 1960s, first introduced them to each other, and in 1973, Scorsese and De Niro embarked on MEAN STREETS, the first of their forays into the gangster genre as well as the first fully elaborated iteration of their anti-studio, highly personal style of filmmaking.

The film’s success led to perhaps their most famous collaboration, 1976’s TAXI DRIVER, which encompasses the film noir fever dream of “God’s lonely man” with De Niro as the troubled antihero Travis Bickle. The following year saw another ambitious although entirely atypical film for the duo: the 1940s-set musical romance NEW YORK, NEW YORK, in which De Niro plays opposite Liza Minnelli as the ruthlessly ambitious musician Jimmy Doyle.

The 1980s through the '90s were an equally iconic period for the pair, beginning with RAGING BULL, often considered one of the best films of the 1980s. Two years later, THE KING OF COMEDY’s unflattering look at showbiz told through the agonizing and hilarious desperation of De Niro’s Rupert Pupkin was initially unable to connect with audiences but has now become a modern classic. After an eight-year hiatus, the two reunited with the mob drama GOODFELLAS, in which De Niro plays the real-life gangster Jimmy Conway, and teamed the following year to make the psychological thriller CAPE FEAR.

After 1995’s Las Vegas-set three-hour epic CASINO, De Niro and Scorsese took the longest break of their partnership, until their long-awaited reunion in 2019’s THE IRISHMAN, which is perhaps their most towering achievement to date, a sweeping chronicle of 20th-century America that is also a painfully intimate and terrifying portrait of a man who sells his soul and is left with nothing to show for it. Join us at the Egyptian for a conversation between Scorsese and De Niro preceding a screening of THE IRISHMAN, and then on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January at the Aero for matinees of their previous masterpieces.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by Chris LeMaire and Jim Hemphill.
