Takashi Miike In Person!

TAKASHI MIIKE: CINEMA IN OVERDRIVE
Presented by the American Cinematheque and Beyond Fest

One of Japan’s most prolific and outrageous filmmakers, Takashi Miike has directed nearly 100 features since 1990. That number is more due to work habits than ambition; as a young man, Miike would have preferred racing motorbikes to making movies. But he wasn’t cut out for the track, and so he turned to the Yokohama Vocational School of Broadcast and Film because it didn’t require an entrance exam and would get him out of his parents’ house in Osaka.

It turned out to be a good fit; school founder Shohei Imamura was a director with an independent streak and an iconoclastic spirit that rubbed off on Miike, who got his first screen credit as an assistant director on Imamura’s ZEGEN. Working as an assistant director and later in the fast-paced worlds of TV and straight-to-video production taught Miike to be quick … and not too picky about projects he was offered. “My attitude is that I don't refuse any offers, but I really consider the way to do it very carefully,” he once remarked. “I think there are two types of directors. One is the type that is very careful of himself and chooses the subjects that fit him and that he really wants to do and he does them carefully. The other type does one thing after another and is not afraid of changing himself. He changes naturally while making these films one after another. I am the second type.”

That flexibility explains the presence of children’s adventure (NINJA KIDS!!!), travelogue (THE BIRD PEOPLE IN CHINA) and courtroom dramedy (ACE ATTORNEY) on Miike’s resume. But they are far outnumbered by much bloodier fare such as the psychological horror thriller AUDITION, which made his reputation among extreme cinema fans worldwide. With an immediately recognizable style mixing bad-boy violence (as in yakuza film CITY OF LOST SOULS) and black-comic weirdness (the category-defying THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS and VISITOR Q), Takashi Miike has a unique talent for turning the unwatchable into something hypnotic.

Takashi Miike's latest film, BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL, begins a week-long run at the Nuart Theatre on 11/3. Our thanks to distributor Magnolia Pictures for their assistance with this series.

Series compiled by William Morris. Program notes by John Hagelston and Kelsey Merrill.
