STANDING TALL: A CENTURY OF GREGORY PECK

Few actors stood as tall as Gregory Peck (April 5, 1916 – June 12, 2003), who was for decades one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men. Though he would occasionally play against type, Peck’s characters typically embodied every virtue one could hope for in a screen star.

That was never truer than in his Oscar-winning performance as a small-town public defender in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, a role that the American Film Institute cited as the greatest movie hero of the 20th century, and a personal favorite of Peck. As in his earlier GENTLEMEN’S AGREEMENT, he played a man courageously fighting discrimination, and colleagues including producer Alan J. Pakula and costar Brock Peters saw strong similarities between the kindly, upright Atticus Finch and the actor.

Peck had a commanding presence that was well-suited for war films (TWELVE O’CLOCK HIGH, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE) and a clean-cut charm that made love scenes with Audrey Hepburn (ROMAN HOLIDAY) and Ingrid Bergman (SPELLBOUND) memorable. He was the man we all wished we could be, from an era when Hollywood minted role models, not just celebrities.

Series also includes CAPE FEAR, DESIGNING WOMAN and THE STALKING MOON.

Series compiled by Grant Moninger, Gwen Deglise and John Hagelston. Program notes by John Hagelston.
