The Beyond Fest main screen is screening all manner of '80s gems today, and the small screen wanted in on the action: Here’s a collection of '80s-inspired shorts, spanning slashers, dream smashers and party crashers to metal, murder, mayhem and the dark lord himself with, like, totally bitchin’ aesthetics.
Films include:
"The Stare" (Australia, 9 min. Dir. Louisa Weichmann) On a late-night train ride home a girl encounters an unnerving stranger staring at her from the far end of the train carriage.
"Lane 9" (USA, 15 min. Dirs. Jessica Valentine, Richard Valentine) On Halloween 1979, a small town is turned upside down when a transient evil takes up residence in lane 9 of the local bowling alley.
"Murderabiliac" (USA, 10 min. Dir. Richard Karpala) A strange murderabilia seller summons his buyer.
"The Animator" (USA, 2 min. Dir. Trent Shy) An animator takes his anger out on the source of his frustration... his puppets.
"The Loop" (USA, 8 min. Dir. Rich Ragsdale) Mikey's older brother and his girlfriend, Tommy and Cindi, bring home a 1980s straight-to-video slasher flick to watch...or is it?
"Satanic Panic '87" (Scotland, 4 min. Dir. Bryan M. Ferguson) It’s 1987 and two metalheads open a gateway to hell when following the instructions of a satanic aerobics tape.
"Skjemt Blod" (USA, 6 min. Dir. Gwenmarie White) In her CalArts thesis, SKJEMT BLOD (which translates to “bad blood” or “tainted blood” in Norwegian), Gwenmarie White uses what she has coined “girl kvlture” as a vehicle for meditation on American brutality and survival in late-stage capitalism.
"5% Dad" (South Africa, 10 min. Dir. Lyall Coburn) Following her occultist mother's death, a disillusioned daughter is bequeathed a way to finally connect with the father she never knew.
"Starcadian: Freak Night" (USA, 7 min. Dirs. Rob O'Neill, Starcadian) A pizza delivery girl stumbles into an underground monster nightclub presided over by the mysterious Starcadian in this latest chapter of interconnected narrative music videos.
"Lost Weekend" (USA, 14 min. Dirs. Bradford Thomason, Brett Whitcomb) In 1984, two friends from small-town Pennsylvania win an MTV contest and the chance to party with Van Halen for 48 hours.
