ROCK & ANIMATION

The release of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album had many ripple effects, inspiring not just the golden age of psychedelia but a broader realization that pop culture and art were not mutually exclusive. The ensuing creative explosion was felt in animation as well as music, and YELLOW SUBMARINE remains one of the gems of the era. Director George Dunning, who had worked on the Beatles’ earlier TV cartoon series, supervised nearly 200 animators to create the dazzling and surreal fantasy adventure. The Beatles involvement was minimal beyond providing the music; the soundtrack and score have been remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound for the film’s 50th anniversary rerelease.

Pink Floyd we also at the vanguard of British psychedelic rock, and though their big-screen opus surfaced some 15 years after YELLOW SUBMARINE, it features animation that’s just as memorable. PINK FLOYD - THE WALL, based on the group’s concept album about a rock star who isolates himself from the world, is largely live-action (with rocker Bob Geldof in the lead role) but features nightmarish segments designed by political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe. The mixing of trippy animation and rock music was hardly confined to England; Eiichi Yamamoto’s BELLADONNA OF SADNESS is among the most amazing cult films to emerge from Japan in the 1970s, featuring watercolor-inspired, often erotic imagery and the driving progressive rock of Masahiko Satoh.
