Kirk Douglas In Person!

September 19-23, 2012, at the Egyptian Theatre

There are actors, there are movie stars, and then there are legends. No other word seems fitting for Kirk Douglas, a “ragman's son” born to poor Russian Jewish immigrants in 1916. Douglas' determined pursuit of an acting career led him to the New York stage and later (thanks to an assist from acting school classmate Lauren Bacall) to Hollywood, where he scored a knockout punch with 1949's CHAMPION. The film brought Douglas his first of three Oscar nominations (the others were for 1952's THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and 1956's LUST FOR LIFE) and established the persona - a tough guy who could be as ruthless as he was heroic - that helped make him a top box office draw for decades. His 1996 honorary Academy Award saluted "50 years as a creative and moral force," and in both of those regards, the star has shown extraordinary leadership.

One of the first prominent actors to start his own production company (he spent years developing ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST before handing the reins to son Michael), Douglas was instrumental in breaking the blacklist, using his clout to get writer Dalton Trumbo screen credit on SPARTACUS. One of the last remaining links to Hollywood's golden age, Kirk Douglas remains as inspiring in life as he is intense on screen.

Join us at the American Cinematheque for an in-person tribute to legendary actor Kirk Douglas, including LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, PATHS OF GLORY, ACE IN THE HOLE and a family matinee of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA.

Series compiled by Grant Moninger, Gwen Deglise and Beth Hanna. Program notes by John Hagelston.

We are thrilled to welcome Kirk Douglas to the Egyptian Theatre! He will speak before LONELY ARE THE BRAVE on September 19.
