Oliver Smith: The Hollywood Musical by Design / GUYS AND DOLLS
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Art Directors Guild Film Society. Sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.

"Oliver Smith: The Hollywood Musical by Design," Oliver Smith (1918 – 1994) was a designer of Broadway musicals and films including GUYS AND DOLLS, THE BAND WAGON, OKLAHOMA! and PORGY AND BESS, as well as operas (“La Traviata”) and ballet (“Swan Lake”). He was nominated for 25 Tony Awards and won 10.

A panel of production designers trained by Oliver Smith, including Jeffrey Beecroft (DANCES WITH WOLVES), Howard Cummings (THE USUAL SUSPECTS), Mayne Berke (THE PRINCESS BRIDE) and Kalina Ivanov (HBO's "Grey Gardens"), will discuss his legacy. Moderating the discussion will be Emmy®-winning production designer JOHN IACOVELLI, himself a student of Smith.

Followed at 6:30 PM by the feature:

1955, Park Circus/MGM, 150 min, USA, Dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Frank Loesser’s Broadway hit, inspired by Damon Runyon’s tales of Times Square hoods and gamblers, becomes one of the 1950s’ most enjoyable musicals in the hands of director Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Needing $1,000 to rent space for his floating crap game, Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) bets Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando, in his only song-and-dance role) that he can find a girl immune to Masterson’s charms – specifically a strait-laced missionary (a wonderful Jean Simmons). “Luck Be a Lady” is just one of the great songs here.
