NOSTALGIA AMERICANA

The 1950s were a simpler time, if not necessarily a better one. To judge from the troubled lead characters in one of the era’s most iconic films, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, these weren’t happy days for everyone. Nostalgia elevates fond memories at the expense of painful ones, which generally leads to historical inaccuracy - and occasionally to great popular entertainment.

Though set in 1962, George Lucas’ AMERICAN GRAFFITI kick-started the ’50s nostalgia craze with its nonstop soundtrack of early rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop hits. Featuring an ensemble cast of soon-to-be stars, it’s a bittersweet look at the end of the high school years, a transitional time that’s also the focus of Francis Ford Coppola’s THE OUTSIDERS and PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, in which Kathleen Turner is transported back to her senior year. Michael J. Fox does his share of time traveling in the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy (twice to the 1950s and once to the 1880s). While much of Marty McFly’s adventures take place in a high school setting, the kids of STAND BY ME stand on the precipice of junior high - childhood is a particularly strong source of nostalgia.

Sports, too, can elicit talk of “the good old days,” and no one ever made baseball look better than Robert Redford as THE NATURAL. As we celebrate the legend-shrouded founding of our country this July Fourth weekend, join us for some of the movies’ most evocative looks at America in earlier times.
