NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: EYES ON THE PLANET
Co-presented by National Geographic

The National Geographic Society has been exploring and protecting the planet since 1888, and television’s National Geographic Channel continues to promote the power of science, exploration and storytelling to change the world. HOSTILE PLANET draws attention to the most extraordinary — almost supernatural — accounts of animals that have adapted to the cruelest evolutionary curveballs. Hosted by survivalist and adventurer Bear Grylls, HOSTILE PLANET zooms in on the world’s most extreme environments to reveal the animal kingdom’s epic stories of survival on this fast and continuously changing planet.

An extraordinarily challenging environment is also setting of feature documentary FREE SOLO. The Oscar-winning film follows free climber Alex Honnold as he embarks on his most unbelievable feat yet: becoming the first person to free solo the 3,000 feet granite wall of El Capitan. Host Morgan Freeman takes viewers on an awe-inspiring quest of a different sort in THE STORY OF GOD; the Emmy-nominated hit series travels to 30 different cities of historical and anthropological importance to take an expansive look at religions celebrated around the world. These free screenings are accompanied by a theatrical feature exploring similar terrain: BARAKA, a Cinematheque favorite filmed entirely without dialogue in a stunning cascade of crystalline, time-lapse 70mm images.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Stephanie Montgomery. Program notes by John Hagelston.
