Though he had a well-established career on stage and in silents, Lionel Atwill (1885-1946) truly found his calling as an actor with the explosion of horror films in the early 1930s. There was something about his British accent and stern demeanor that said “sinister,” and when he found success starring in the macabre DOCTOR X and its follow-up, MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM, Atwill was welcomed into the rogues gallery peopling such monster movies as SON OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Lionel Atwill didn’t require supernatural settings to bring an air of menace to the screen; his presence adds dark balance to Marlene Dietrich’s magnetism in the romantic dramas THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN and THE SONG OF SONGS. And he makes a pretty imposing plantation owner in swashbuckler CAPTAIN BLOOD.

Join us for a salute to one of Hollywood’s most reliably malevolent character actors, which also includes MAN MADE MONSTER, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN and SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM.
