JERRY LEWIS TO THE MAX

Jerry Lewis has been entertaining audiences for more than 70 years. The star explores unusually rich dramatic territory in the title role of soon-to-be-released MAX ROSE. A former professional jazz pianist, Rose is devastated by the death of his wife (Claire Bloom) and further shocked to learn that she may have had a secret relationship with another man. It’s a portrayal informed by a lifetime as an entertainer, humanitarian and family man - it’s Jerry Lewis at his best.

Born in New Jersey to show business parents, Lewis soon was working the Borscht Belt himself, getting laughs with a “record act” miming to recordings of operatic and popular songs. In 1946, Lewis teamed with singer Dean Martin – a phenomenally successful 10-year partnership that produced 16 feature films and countless nightclub, radio and TV appearances. On his own, Lewis’ star continued to rise; by 1959, he had a contract with Paramount that made him the highest-paid comedian in movies.

As hilarious as he was in front of the camera, Lewis also had a gift for writing and directing. Such films as THE LADIES MAN and THE NUTTY PROFESSOR display a master’s sense of staging and timing (among Lewis’ many French fans, Jean-Luc Godard has said, “Jerry Lewis is the only American director who has made progressive films; he is much better than Chaplin and Keaton”). In the late 1960s, Lewis began teaching a graduate course in direction at the University of Southern California, which later became his book The Total Film-Maker. A total performer, he also proved adept at drama, drawing critical acclaim (and a BAFTA Best Supporting Actor nomination) in 1982 for a serious turn in Martin Scorsese’s THE KING OF COMEDY.

We are thrilled to welcome Jerry Lewis to the Aero Theatre!
