IB TECH FAVORITES

For most folks, Technicolor means vibrant, saturated colors. Movie lovers know Technicolor as everyone's favorite motion picture color process and associate the term with the golden age of Hollywood. Developed by a brilliant team of researchers, scientists and engineers, Technicolor's fourth color process, a dye transfer process commonly known as IB Tech, was a runaway success that permanently changed the film industry. There were many ways of achieving color on film in the first decades of cinema, but Tech IB was the most vivid and stable with a full range of colors and a relatively quick printing process for mass distribution. It also required no special projection equipment, which made it popular with exhibitors as well as filmmakers and audiences.

The last Technicolor feature film was produced in 1955. The IB Tech color printing process continued in the United States until 1974, with a brief resurgence in the 1990s. Other than this resurgence, and the continued use of dye transfer printing for several years in Europe and China, audiences outside of the arthouse and museum circuit have had no occasion to see the IB Technicolor process first hand. With only a few exceptions, today's audiences might know the term Technicolor, but don't know firsthand what it looks like. Instead they are limited to worthy reproductions.

Like our beloved nitrate, there are a finite number of 35mm IB Tech prints in the world. The color may be stable, but the film base is slowly shrinking and decomposing with time. Curious audiences lucky enough to see IB Tech prints projected should take every opportunity they get. It's only a matter of a few generations, at best, before the last of these prints are permanently locked away due to their rarity or unprojectability.
