Over the past two decades, Belgian cinema, be it from Flanders or from the French speaking part of the country, has boasted richly diverse films that consistently garner critical praise and worldwide anticipation. From the unsettling but still urgently relevant MAN BITES DOG which rocked the Cannes Film Festival in 1992 and the quirky and vibrant tale of identity mix-up in TOTO THE HERO, to the monumental saga of DAENS or the Oscar-nominated EVERYBODY'S FAMOUS, the outstanding thrillers MEMORY OF A KILLER and DOSSIER K, and the string of critically-lauded dramatic works by the brilliant filial duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, including this year's Cannes Grand Prix co-winner THE KID WITH THE BIKE, to the impressive presence in general of Belgian films at Cannes 2011 (including Director's Fortnight selections BLUE BIRD, LA FEE and LES GEANTS), the Belgian film industry has proven its dexterity in tone, originality in aesthetic and prominence in the international film community.
After a successful screening series that coincided with Belgium's presidency of the European Union from July to December of 2010, the best of recent Belgian cinema is back in 2011 with a program showcasing a different recent Belgian film on every third Wednesday of the month.
