GOING WAY BACK WITH LYNN SHELTON

“Many of my films originate out of a desire to work with a particular actor, and in this case that actor was Marc Maron,” explains writer-director Lynn Shelton of her latest project. “When I was struck with the idea of him playing a pawnshop owner at the center of a comedy caper, he was game, and the seed of SWORD OF TRUST officially sprouted.” Inspired by films like PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, MOTHER! and the work of Yorgos Lanthimos, this tale of a battle over a Civil War relic veers gleefully off the beaten track of realism, displaying Shelton’s lighter side after the full-blown drama of 2017’s OUTSIDE IN.

Since her first foray into feature filmmaking with WE GO WAY BACK in 2006, Lynn Shelton has emerged as one of the most successful indie directors and one of the most sought-after TV directors in the business. Equally comfortable with drama and comedy - and the awkward spaces where they overlap - Shelton’s work has screened at festivals including TIFF, Sundance, Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Slamdance and SXSW. She has picked up honors at several of those and garnered Independent Spirit Awards for HUMPDAY and MY EFFORTLESS BRILLIANCE.

Writing, directing, and producing (sometimes even editing) her own films, Shelton maintains enviable control over her work, but also fosters an extraordinary atmosphere of collaboration in the creative process with her talented, carefully selected casts. Aiming to capture the unique manner in which real people speak and behave, her performers are often allowed to improvise upon the foundation of her scripts. As she puts it, “My whole purpose was to see if I could create a narrative film that felt exactly like a documentary, like you were dropped into these people’s lives.” It’s a process that has drawn together such stars as Rosemarie DeWitt, Emily Blunt, Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, Ellen Page and Edie Falco to help Shelton turn genre and storytelling expectations upside down and examine family ties, friendship and love with remarkable authenticity.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise. Program notes by Ben Simington and John Hagelston.

We are thrilled to welcome Lynn Shelton to the Aero Theatre!
