DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY MATINEES

Beginning this month, we bring weekday matinees to the Aero, sliding into the vacated LACMA afternoon slot of Tuesdays at 1:00 PM. Bargain priced at $6 - and free to American Cinematheque Members - these single feature are perfect for retirees, budget-conscious filmgoers and cineastes looking for a good excuse to take a break from work. All four August films are on 35mm.

This month’s theme is “Dysfunctional Family Matinees,” which includes a trio of well-known favorites plus an overlooked gem that inspired another entry in the series. A boy’s best friend is his mother in Alfred Hitchcock’s legendary shocker PSYCHO. To the parents who don’t know what to do with him in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, James Dean cries, “You’re tearing me apart!” In TOKYO STORY, an elderly couple visit their children, who would rather be left to their own lives. Yasujirô Ozu’s classic drama was inspired by Leo McCarey’s MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, a Depression-era tale with an even starker depiction of aging parents.

Series compiled by Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.
