DE PALMA REVISITED

Since bursting onto the scene as part of the New York underground in the 1960s with THE WEDDING PARTY and GREETINGS, writer-director Brian De Palma has forged a career as one of the American cinema’s great mavericks of both style and content. After finding critical acclaim and cult status with his early satires, the director turned to the thriller genre as the perfect vehicle through which to deliver his trenchant commentaries on sex, class, gender and power: Films such as SISTERS, CARRIE, DRESSED TO KILL and BODY DOUBLE were as chilling as they were stylish and thoughtful - all while being bleakly funny.

Over the years the De Palma palette expanded to include gangster movies (SCARFACE, CARLITO’S WAY), war films (CASUALTIES OF WAR, REDACTED) and even studio tentpoles (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE), but the director retained his singular wry vision and continued his experimentation in the suspense genre with modern masterpieces like RAISING CAIN and FEMME FATALE. On the occasion of the premiere of Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s comprehensive new documentary, DE PALMA, the Cinematheque is proud to present four nights of the director’s best films, followed by a Member screening of Baumbach and Paltrow’s appreciation.

Series compiled by Grant Moninger and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by Jim Hemphill.
