THROUGH A LENS DARKLY: THE FILMS OF INGMAR BERGMAN
Double Feature!
CRIES AND WHISPERS / AUTUMN SONATA

Liv Ullmann, Ingrid Thulin and Harriet Andersson are sisters reflecting on their disappointing lives against the blood-red backdrop of a turn-of-the-century mansion and the atmosphere of a dream in CRIES AND WHISPERS (celebrating its 40th anniversary), while in AUTUMN SONATA, in what would be her last performance, Ingrid Bergman (CASABLANCA) returns to Swedish cinema after 40 years to play a concert pianist coming home to an anguished reunion with neglected daughter Liv Ullmann.

40th Anniversary!

CRIES AND WHISPERS
VISKNIGAR OCH ROP
1972, Janus Films, 106 min, Sweden, Dir: Ingmar Bergman

Amid the blood-red backgrounds of a turn-of-the-century mansion and the atmosphere of a dream, Liv Ullmann and Ingrid Thulin keep a death watch over spinster sister Harriet Andersson, while flashbacks depict the disappointed lives, meaningless marriages and sisterly conflicts, with a final moving image suggesting what has been lost. In Swedish with English subtitles.

AUTUMN SONATA
HOSTSONATEN
1978, Janus Films, 92 min, Sweden, Dir: Ingmar Bergman

In a long-planned collaboration with director Ingmar Bergman (ironically no relation), actress Ingrid Bergman (CASABLANCA) returned to Swedish cinema after 40 years to play a concert pianist coming home to an anguished reunion with neglected daughter Liv Ullmann. Bergman was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, in what turned out to be her last feature film role. In Swedish with English subtitles.

Both films will screen in 35mm prints.
