New Restorations!

CLASSICS FROM THE COHEN FILM COLLECTION

Monthly at the Egyptian and Aero Theatres

The scope of the Cohen Film Collection is staggering, ranging from silent film landmarks like THE GENERAL, THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE BIRTH OF A NATION to features from such esteemed directors as Fritz Lang, Jean Renoir, Luis Buñuel and Carl Theodor Dreyer to comedy, musical, avant-garde and animated shorts. Recently the Cohen Media Group has launched an ambitious campaign to restore films from their acquired Rohauer collection and bring them into the digital age. The founder of the Society of Cinema Arts in Los Angeles and later a film curator of the Huntington Hartford Gallery of Modern Art in New York, Raymond Rohauer (1924-87) had amassed a world-renowned collection of films - more than 700 titles spanning 75 years. Rohauer preserved and distributed these works, partnering with the likes of Buster Keaton, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and the Harry Langdon estate to ensure access to the best extant prints and negatives.

The American Cinematheque is thrilled to bring some of these treasures to the big screen with a year-long retrospective of the Cohen Film Collection. Our monthly screening series begins with the D.W. Griffith classic INTOLERANCE, restored with original tints and tones and featuring a musical score written and conducted by Carl Davis. Future programs will include films by Claude Chabrol and Jean-Luc Godard as well as a multi-night centennial tribute to actress Vivien Leigh, A Year-Long Tribute to the Cohen Film Collection " featuring D.W. Griffith's 1916 restored epic INTOLERANCE with the original tints, filmmaker Costa Gavras in person with AMEN starring Matthieu Kassovitz, a 90th Anniversary Screening of Douglas Fairbanks' THE THIEF OF BAGDAD and more. Programs will be posted on our website as details become available.

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Tim Lanza. Program notes by John Hagelston.
