CHARACTER WITNESS: THE FILMS OF TED KOTCHEFF

Born in Toronto to Bulgarian immigrants, director-producer Ted Kotcheff got his start in the entertainment business as a stagehand for the Canadian Broadcasting Company; by age 24, he had become the CBC’s youngest director. Moving to London in 1958 to pursue stage and film work, Kotcheff shared a flat with writer Mordecai Richler, and the two collaborated on four features, including the Golden Bear-winning THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY KRAVITZ.

The success of that film helped make Kotcheff one of the most in-demand filmmakers in Hollywood during the 1970s and ’80s, bringing him work across a wide range of genres. Adopting playwright Anton Chekov’s principle that “I am not the judge of my characters, I am their best witness,” Kotcheff cast a sympathetic eye on the likes of a schoolteacher on the brink of madness (WAKE IN FRIGHT), husband-and-wife thieves (FUN WITH DICK AND JANE) and a persecuted ex-Green Beret (FIRST BLOOD).

Recent years have seen Kotcheff return to his TV roots with a dozen seasons as a producer on television’s “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” where he estimates he auditioned more than 27,000 performers to fill roles on the show. That’s an awful lot of headshots. But with 60 years of entertainment industry experience, few people are better qualified to bring characters to life onscreen than Ted Kotcheff.

Ted Kotcheff discusses standing up for Hanoi Jane, his "lost and found" Australian film WAKE IN FRIGHT and more with Susan King on our blog.
