Were it not for knee injuries, Burt Reynolds might have pursued stardom in football; fortunately for us, a college English teacher suggested he take up acting when his days on the playing field were over. With a drama scholarship, Reynolds headed for New York, where he graduated from acting classes to stage roles and television parts in such series as “Gunsmoke” and “Dan August.” In 1972, the performer had a breakout hit with survival thriller DELIVERANCE; by the end of the decade, Reynolds was one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood.

“When I was a kid, Burt Reynolds was my hero,” notes director Adam Rifkin. “So I thought, I’m going to write a script for Burt where we’re going to create a character just for him, the kind of character that I would have loved to see him play - to remind everybody how cool he still is, how funny he still is, and what a brilliant actor he has always been.” As the lead character in THE LAST MOVIE STAR, Reynolds plays Vic Edwards, a former screen icon invited to a film festival that turns out to be a wash, inspiring a journey of rediscovery for both himself and the messed-up millennial assigned to be his driver.

Reynolds’ filmography is ripe for rediscovery; as both actor and director, he imbues everything he does with a smart-ass charisma and an intelligence sometimes more visible in hindsight. Whether in good ol’ boy Southern action mode (SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, WHITE LIGHTNING), gritty drama (SHARKY’S MACHINE) or comedy (THE END), Reynolds creates popular entertainment with the polished craftsmanship of Old Hollywood. As Rifkin sums it up, “In the pantheon of movie stars, Burt Reynolds really stands alone. He is, truly, the last movie star.”

Series compiled by Gwen Deglise and Grant Moninger. Program notes by John Hagelston.

Burt Reynolds joins us in person for discussions following THE LAST MOVIE STAR, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT and GATOR.
