BRUNO GANZ REMEMBERED

Few actors have assembled such an impressive resume as Bruno Ganz, whose film career spanned nearly 60 years and included collaborations with such legendary filmmakers as Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Éric Rohmer and Francis Ford Coppola. Born in Zürich in 1941, the Swiss actor began his career on the stage, where he received critical acclaim for several roles, and he soon turned to film, becoming a key actor in the New German Cinema movement.

In Wim Wender’s 1976 THE AMERICAN FRIEND, an adaptation of one of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels, Ganz played the picture framer-turned-assassin opposite Dennis Hopper, and two years later, he clashed with Klaus Kinski’s blood-sucking ghoul in Werner Herzog’s gothic masterpiece NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE. Wenders and Ganz later reunited in 1987 with the German classic WINGS OF DESIRE, in which he played the earthbound angel Damiel.

Never backing down from difficult roles, Ganz became known internationally for his performance in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s DOWNFALL, in which he portrayed a startlingly human, though no less monstrous, Adolf Hitler. By the end of his life, Ganz had appeared in over 100 productions, with notable roles in films such as Jonathan Demme’s THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (2004), Stephen Daldry’s THE READER (2008), and Lars Von Trier’s THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (2018).
