DOUBLE FEATURE BEGINS AT 7:30PM AT THE EGYPTIAN THEATRE, 6712 HOLLYWOOD BLVD:

Discussion on art forgery following BELTRACCHI with KCRW’s Edward Goldman. Discussion following FINSTERWORLD with director Frauke Finsterwalder.
BELTRACCHI - THE ART OF FORGERY
BELTRACCHI - DIE KUNST DER FÄLSCHUNG
2013, 102 min, Germany, Dir: Arne Birkenstock

This thought-provoking and amusing documentary focuses on the life and work of Wolfgang Beltracchi and his wife Helene, who for nearly four decades fooled the international art world with the biggest forgery scandal of the postwar era. Beltracchi created original works in the style of such masters as Max Ernst, Heinrich Campendonk and Max Pechstein, until a simple mistake led to the couple’s arrest. As Beltracchi and his wife recount their extraordinary story with humor and candor, some profound questions arise: What makes a piece of art an original? And what makes a person an expert? Winner of the German Film Award winner for Best Documentary. In German and French with English subtitles.

FINSTERWORLD
2013, 91 min, Germany, Dir: Frauke Finsterwalder

Set in a sunlit country of shiny, happy people, director Frauke Finsterwalder’s fiction debut offers a visually stunning look at the lives of contemporary Germans over the course of a single day. Through its sophisticated screenplay and ensemble cast including Sandra Hüller, Corinna Harfouch, Roland Zehrfeld and Michael Märtens, FINSTERWORLD intertwines the stories of a police officer with a hidden passion; a documentary filmmaker who lacks vision; a pedicurist and his lonely older client; a wealthy couple who refuse to drive in a German car; a history student who is unmoved by a visit to a concentration camp; and a hermit living in the woods. In each case, something is missing, and these deceptively simple scenarios give way to incisive observations about German identity, leavened with warmth and laughter to create a darkly humorous modern fairy tale. In German with English subtitles.
