Short Film Programs 2013
Filmmakers In Person! Free to Members!
Award-Winning Shorts From The Cinematographers Guild

This event is free to all current American Cinematheque Members, with regular pricing for non-Members.

The Emerging Cinematographer Awards, established by the International Cinematographers Guild 16 years ago, honor the best of the best, with 10 short films selected from more than 100 submitted by members of the 7,000-strong union. The only proviso: The cinematographers on these films cannot yet be in the Director of Photography category - they are camera operators, camera assistants, etc. Enjoy these amazing shorts, with several of the filmmakers in person for a post-discussion Q & A.

Bruno Miotto’s "Don't Let Your Love Annihilate" (9 min.). DP: Michael Pescasio. A long-form music video in which a young man is intrigued by a flirtatious girl.

Velvet A. Smith’s "Ripple Effect" (20 min.). DP: Daron Keet. An unspoken alliance between a young Afghan and a U.S. Special Forces soldier in wartime.

Christian Gossett’s "Only Child" (6 min.). DP: James Takata. A charming portrait of a Chinese factory worker who, while hand-painting dolls, spins off into flights of cerebral fantasy.

Joshua Matthews’ "Dawn" (14 min.). DP: Michael Alden Lloyd. A widower’s grim reality unhinges when a mysterious woman turns up on his property.

Gary Hawes’ "The Money Pet" (10 min.). DP: Stewart Whelan. A modern-day fairy tale about a talented dog that eats some loose change and later passes the currency with compound interest.

Tristan Goligher’s "Cowards and Monsters" (15 min.). DP: Basil Smith. A story unfolds in an unlit apartment in the thick hours after a man discovers his partner’s infidelity.

Luke Frydenker’s "The Girl in the Dark" (5 min.). DP: Robert C. Webb. A boy who tinkers with a video camera discovers that he is able to record the ghost of a little girl.

Scott Schaeffer’s "The Carrier" (18 min.). DP: John Barr. Rita Wilson stars as a woman who becomes messenger and spectator in the painful unraveling of a family secret.

Ruan Magan’s "Angel" (9 min.). DP: Brian O'Carroll. A glimpse into the world of a little girl who saves lives, but struggles for survival in her own personal life.

Jeremiah Jones’ "Carjack" (17 min.). DP: Pete Villani. A car thief gets more than he bargains for when he discovers a sick boy in the back seat.

Following the screening Steven Poster, president if the ICG, will moderate a panel with five of these emerging cinematographers: Daron Keet ("Ripple Effect"), Michael Alden Lloyd ("Dawn"), Robert C. Webb ("The Girl In The Dark"), James Takata ("Only Child") and Pete Villani ("Carjack").
