Iván Zulueta Tribute!
Presented by L.A. OLA – Independent Films From Spain and the American Cinematheque, with the support of SPAIN Arts & Culture

A trailblazer in film and TV as well as a visual artist, Iván Zulueta (1943–2009) left a lasting influence over a generation of young Spanish filmmakers and audiences born in the 1980s and '90s. This tribute to the writer-director marks “10 years without him, 40 years with ARREBATO.”

Program begins with the short “Leo Es Pardo” (1976, 10 min. Dir. Iván Zulueta). An experimental film that laid the groundwork for ARREBATO, this short follows an androgynous protagonist menaced by unseen forces in his Madrid apartment.

Introduction by CalArts professor Clara López Menéndez.
Premiere of New Digital Restoration! 40th Anniversary!

1979, 105 min, Spain, Dir: Iván Zulueta

This brooding cult masterpiece focuses on drug-addicted Madrid director José Sirgado (Eusebio Poncela), who is trying to finish his vampire movie when he gets a package from fellow filmmaker Pedro P. (Will More); the audiovisual materials it contains lead José on a one-way trip down a hallucinatory rabbit hole. Co-starring Almodóvar favorite Cecilia Roth, ARREBATO is loaded with symbolism, and one of the few films to truly capture the mesmerizing nature of cinema.

In Spanish with English subtitles. | Screening format: digital
