Co-presented by Cinematic Void

Born four days apart, Dario Argento and Brian De Palma are both writer-directors with more than a half-century in the filmmaking trenches. Though each has explored a variety of genres over the years, they are best known as unparalleled masters of the thriller. Working in Rome and New York, respectively, Argento and De Palma fill their films with stylish camera work and operatic bloodletting to create a visceral array of memorable set pieces.

Both are well-versed in film history and are clearly fans of Alfred Hitchcock; the cold, calculated precision of the master of suspense runs throughout Argento’s TENEBRAE as well as De Palma’s DRESSED TO KILL (though BLOW OUT shows De Palma also spent time with Michelangelo Antonioni’s films). But where Hitchcock kept most of the gore in his movies off screen, Argento and De Palma revel in the cinematic possibilities of violence.

Though much of the two filmmakers’ oeuvre plays out in realistic settings, both had major early hits plunging into phantasmagoric wonders. One of the first big screen adaptations of Stephen King, De Palma’s CARRIE tracked the explosive rage of a telekinetic teen, climaxing in the deadliest high school prom of all time. SUSPIRIA is set at a dance school run by witches; it’s the first of Argento’s "Three Mothers" trilogy (followed in 1980 by INFERNO). Both of Italian heritage, Argento and De Palma share a love of giallo thrills that makes them cinematic blood brothers.
