ARGENTINA: NEW CINEMA 2018
Presented by the American Cinematheque and the Consulate General and Promotion Center of the Argentine Republic in Los Angeles

Following the success of previous years, our Argentina: New Cinema series returns with some of the best films to emerge from Buenos Aires and beyond in 2017 and 2018. The annual event always draws large crowds from both the local Argentine community and foreign-language film fans, and the latest installment promises to be no different, with an impressive lineup including several Los Angeles premieres.

Among the highlights are Argentina’s official Oscar submission, EL ANGEL, a sexually charged true-crime story of Carlos Robeldo Puch, a baby-faced killer who had become one of Argentina’s most notorious criminals by the time he was 20. The wonderfully entertaining look at friendship MY MASTERPIECE pairs a cranky, past-his-prime painter (Luis Brandoni) with an ethically challenged art dealer (THE CLAN’s Guillermo Francella). Francella also stars in ANIMAL - a wickedly ironic thriller from BIRDMAN’s Oscar-winning writer - in which he plays a man in desperate need of a kidney transplant.

In THE LAST SUIT, an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor (Miguel Ángel Solá) travels to Poland to find the man who saved him from certain death at the end of World War II. Closing our series is the world premiere of OUR WAY TO THE SEA, a road movie about a 75-year-old embarking on his last great adventure.. Don’t miss the opportunity to see South America’s first homegrown film industry come of age on the big screen!

All films are in Spanish with English subtitles unless otherwise noted. Series compiled by Pablo Maseda and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston.
